Schools Southern Newfoundland Expedition: The Outports and Fjords of The Southern Coast of Newfoundland

You will join the Wanderbird in Port Aux Basques which is the marine gateway for people and goods coming and going to and from the island of Newfoundland. This rugged little community is populated year round by hearty folks who typify the warm hearted and determined people who have lived on this coast for centuries.

The next twelve days will find the good ship Wanderbird and her crew visiting many of these remote and beautiful out ports that are only accessible from the sea. You’ll be amazed at the beauty of these small villages with names like Isle aux Morts, Grand Bruit, Ramea, Burgeo, Francois, Milltown, and Gaultois.

We will also be visiting and exploring the largest navigable fjords in North America with sheer walls over a thousand feet high. The real magic of this cruise will be in meeting the Newfoundlanders themselves. After many years of cruising here, the Wanderbird is a recognisable vessel that always draws a crowd. We will sample Newfoundland treats such as scruncheons, cod cheeks and tongues, fresh rhubarb and wild berries if we can find them. Great whales and birding! This past trip we saw Orcas at the mouth of Bay D’espoir!

We will also have the unique opportunity to visit “Little France” as this trip concludes in the French owned islands of St. Pierre and Miquelon. This unique expedition to this magnificent coast is a joint offering of Wanderbird Expedition Cruises and Wooden Boat Magazine’s The Wooden Boat School.

10 days: Thursday June 17 through Saturday June 26, 2010; Wednesday June 15 through Friday, June 24, 2011. You may come aboard on the night before departure, after 6pm. Departs from Port Aux Basques, Newfoundland. Concludes at St. Pierre, France (French-owned Islands 11 miles off the coast of Newfoundland). $3600.

**** Please be advised that Travel Insurance and Emergency Evacuation Insurance are required for this trip.

Expedition Cruise: Exploring the East Coast of Newfoundland & Southern Labrador

You will join the good ship Wanderbird at the wonderful French Island of St. Pierre. This little piece of France is only 15 miles off the coast of Newfoundland though you could easily imagine that you were walking the streets of a small town outside of Paris.

From here we will head north though waters teaming with whales, dolphins, and numerous seabirds like the north Atlantic puffin. We will call at St. John’s and then onwards to one beautiful outpost community after another, as we cruise this magnificent and rugged coast. We will keep our eyes open for icebergs as we travel further north to Saint Anthony, cross the Staits of Belle Isle to Labrador and enter the famous “Ice Berg Alley.” Some of our ports of call in Labrador might include: Red Bay, Henley Harbour, Battle Harbour, Bateau, Rigolet or Cartwright.

We will enjoy a traditional local feast before disembarking in Makkovik, Labrador. This expedition will offer us a broad cultural view of many of the peoples who live in these beautiful wild lands and northern climate.

16 days: Wednesday June 30 through Thursday July 15, 2010; Tuesday June 28 through Wednesday, July 13, 2011. You may come aboard the Wanderbird on the evening before departure, after 6pm. Departs from St. Pierre, France, (French owned islands 11 miles off the coast of Newfoundland). Concludes in Makkovic, Labrador. $4200.
