Crew Positions

2008 Crew positions available are: cook, engineer, deckhand, 2nd cook (galley assistant), and apprentice.
We are also looking for a reservationist in the Belfast, Maine area
.
If interested please phone our office at 207-338-3088.

Working aboard the Wanderbird is rewarding, fun, educational, and will form a fine foundation for future experiences on land or sea. Beginning in early May, and continuing through November, we work 7 days a week from 6am often until 10 or 11 pm, and we do this with smiles. We take great pride in running a safe, fun and professional ship, where aboard, the crew is more like family than anything else.

Those of you who are interested in applying for crew berths should be friendly, efficient, hard working, versatile and posses the ability to work well with others in relatively close quarters. We value a positive attitude and a healthy work ethic as much as any previous shipboard experience. The Wanderbird is a friendly ship. Mutual respect and courtesy is expected at all times between crewmembers and all others aboard.

In order to provide a safe experience for both our crew and our guests we have a training program for our crew. This includes fire fighting basics, first aid, CPR, life raft & cold water survival training, proper use of flares, EPIRB, life rings & ship’s equipment. Crew members also learn small ship maintenance.

Rose

Rose Goetsch
Rose is a 38 year old pilot & owns her own plane. She has been working in the skydiving industry for the past 15 years. Rose came to join the Wanderbird crew for an adventure and to give life at sea a try, as she and her husband are contemplating buying and living aboard a sailboat. Rosie is fun and a great addition to the crew. Rosie is our fine chief cook this summer.

Molly Molly Adelstein
Molly is a 25 year old biology researcher from the Boston area who came to explore a more hands on, outdoor experience, as she is considering a career in diving. Molly loves travel, music and a good laugh. We are fortunate to have Molly as crew member with her constant smile and flexible nature. Molly is sailing as deckhand.
Esther

Esther Msika
Esther is our 14 year old apprentice from Nova Scotia. Esther fluently speaks German, French and English as a third language. Esther has lived aboard her family sailboat with her parents and two brothers, while sailing from Europe to the Carribean, and on to Canada. We met Esther and her family while sailing in St Pierre last summer, and we are glad to have her aboard Wanderbird this season. Esther loves music, dance and has a beautiful voice.

Deckhand:
The deckhand works on deck, in the rigging, in the galley and below decks in the cabins... pretty much all over the vessel. We will train you and we ask that you show us that aboard the Wanderbird is where you want to be!

Chef/Assistant Chef:
Lots of baking, cooking, preparing, serving, and cleaning up after delicious gourmet meals. The galley is spacious and well laid out. Baking skills are a plus but not necessary. You will also be asked to help on deck at times during the day. If you love to cook or would like to learn then this is a great job for you!

Engineer:
The Wanderbird is a small ship with a wonderful, full sized engine room. Our ideal engineer would be a retired ship's engineer or any mechanically inclined person who wants to have a comfortable berth and a chance to adventure with us aboard the Wanderbird. Our main engine is a LARGE Dutch slow turning beauty of 500 hp at 500 rpm. We are in the process of cleaning and repainting the engine room and the enginer would certainly be involved in this, as well as maintenance and care of the equipment and engines. A general handyman's attitude would be very welcome. Experience is a plus but we would definitely consider someone with a keen interest to learn.
